NEW ORLEANS, La. - - On the heels of a program-best win over No. 13 Texas, the Tulane women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 win over crosstown rival UNO at the Goldring Tennis Center on Monday.
The Green Wave, ranked 19th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won its ninth straight match to improve to 18-1 overall and 10-0 at home. UNO falls to 13-6 with the loss.
Tulane got off to a slow start in doubles, but still won on courts one and two to claim the opening doubles point. The Green Wave duo of Darya Ivanov and Julie Smekodub posted an 8-2 win over the UNO team of Mazinova and Osedumme at the No. 1 spot, while Maria Ivanov and Jenny Kuhn were 8-6 winners over the Privateer team of Fogelberg and Zembski at the No. 2 position.
From there, however, Tulane rolled through singles to record its fourth 7-0 win of the year. Freshman Dorottya Magas gave Tulane a 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-3 win over Ana Santoro at the No. 4 spot. Jenny Kuhn, ranked 99th by the ITA, increased the Tulane lead to 3-0 moments later when she closed out her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Laetitia Zembski at No. 1 singles.
Julie Smekodub, ranked 41st by the ITA, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Lucie Mazinova at No. 2 singles, clinching the dual match win for the Green Wave. Darya Ivanov, ranked 66th, made it 5-0 for Tulane with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Patricia Osedumme on court three, while Erika Valdes, ranked 46th, added a 6-2, 6-4 win over Liselott Hedenberg at No. 6 doubles to give the Wave a 6-0 advantage. Nancy Kockott closed out the scoring for the Wave with her 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 win over Michaela Fogelberg on court five.
"We had such a great win on Friday against Texas, but we seemed to have all the usual troubles associated with traveling," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We had a bit of a rough start tonight, thanks to the travel and the girls starting exams, but we fought hard to the end and got a good team win."
Tulane returns to action on Thursday, April 8, as the Green Wave play host to Conference USA rival South Florida at the Goldring Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
