LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Tulane University women's track team finished in fifth place at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Cardinal Park on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Jelena Jurlina scored in her third event of the weekend to finish with a team-high 17 points.
The Green Wave finished with 60 points in the 13-team field, despite the loss of standout freshman Gloria Asumnu to injury. It was a 17-point improvement over last season, when Tulane closed in 10th place. Houston won the C-USA Championship with 121 points, followed immediately by TCU and its 120 points. USF took third place with 103.33 points while Southern Miss was fourth with 78.83 points.
"We competed hard despite the tough conditions," Tulane coach Heather Van Norman said. "I was disappointed in a lot of things, but at the same time I am pleased that we showed so much improvement over last season. I am excited to get back out there coaching this team and continue to work on the things that we need to work on."
Jurlina took eighth place in the shot put on Saturday, adding to her first-place effort in the javelin and her third-place performance in the discus on Friday.
Junior Angel Dooley earned all-league honors in three events on Saturday, taking fourth place in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400-meter dash while helping the 4x100 relay team to sixth place. Junior Lissie Mo was also a three-event all-conference selection. After finishing third in the long jump on Friday, she posted a seventh-place performance in the triple jump on Saturday, while joining Dooley on the 4x100 squad.
Junior Helmi Leppanen was also a mutiple-event scorer for the Wave, adding a third-place finish in the shot put to her second-place effort in the javelin on Friday.
The other scorer for the Wave on Saturday was senior Eva Lustigova, who took fourth place in the 800-meter run.
Tulane will return to action on May 28-29 with multiple individuals competing at the NCAA Regional Championships in Baton Rouge.
