AUSTIN, Texas - Tulane University junior Jelena Jurlina was the lone individual in action for the Green Wave at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships which continued on Friday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Jurlina opened action on Wednesday afternoon with a javelin throw of 142 feet, eight inches in rainy conditions. The event was suspended midway through with the final competitors throwing on Thursday, in much more favorable weather conditions. Jurlina's throw placed her at 19th place overall in the preliminary rounds. The top 12 advance to the finals.
"The weather was not nice and that was a factor," Tulane coach Heather Van Norman said. "But she is not one to make excuses, she just didn't qualify. Hopefully things will go better tomorrow. She is ready for the discus; she is fired up."
The preliminary rounds of the discus had also been scheduled for Wednesday, but the weather forced the first rounds to be cancelled. Instead, all competitors will advance to compete in the discus finals on Friday morning, beginning at 11 a.m., with the top eight earning All-America honors.
