NEW ORLEANS, La. - One of the Green Wave's most active teams in forms of community service, the Tulane University baseball team participated in the Outreach Tulane Paint Rally for New Orleans Public Schools on Aug. 28.
Twenty five members of the baseball squad helped prime walls in the school cafeteria, hallways and classrooms at nearby Eleanor McMain Magnet School. The Green Wave joined Outreach Tulane as part of a one-day volunteer community service event for incoming and returning Tulane students, as well as faculty, staff and their families.
"I believe these types of community projects benefits both parties," head coach Rick Jones said. "It assists McMain, and our players get a lot out of it as well. It gets them active in the community in which they live and gives them the feeling of accomplishment beyond the normal, day-to-day student-athlete experience."
The Tulane Paint Rally is a Tulane community effort sponsored by the Tulane Staff Advisory Council, Tulane Alumni, CACTUS (Community Action Council of Tulane University Students) and the Office of Community Services.
The Paint Rally is one of several community service projects the Tulane baseball team has been associated with in the past few years. During the 2003-04 academic year, the Green Wave continued their partnership with St. Michael's Special School, hosting the annual intrasquad game along with the students of the institution. Then, in December, the team went to St. Michael's where they were treated to a holiday play before sharing fun and fellowship with the students.
In addition, while the team had an off day in between the end of the 2004 regular season and C-USA Tournament, they made a visit to The Briarwood School in Houston, Texas.
"It's our goal here at Tulane that upon graduation, our student-athletes not only become leaders in their field of study, but also that our players maintain an active roll in community service efforts," Jones said.
