Women's Tennis Ranked Ninth By ITA

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane women's tennis team opens the season on Sunday ranked ninth as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its first rankings of the spring on Tuesday.
Previously Tulane's highest ranking was last season, when the Green Wave finished the year at No. 11.
In addition to holding the highest ranking in school history, the Green Wave also has five individuals and two doubles teams in the rankings. Senior Nancy Kockott holds the No. 51 spot after compiling a 28-6 record last season. Darya Ivanov is ranked No. 64 while two-time Conference USA Player of the Year and All-American Jenny Kuhn is No. 81. Sophomore Dorottya Magas and senior Maria Ivanov find themselves ranked 106th and 112th, respectively. On the doubles chart, the pair of Kockott and All-American Julie Smekodub earned the No. 26 spot, and the Ivanov sister duo came in 49th.
"The strength of our team is our depth, and to have five players in the ranking is indicative of that," Tulane women's tennis coach David Schumacher said. "It's nice to break the Top 10 for the first time, but to be there at the end of the season is when it counts."
Tulane returns 12 players from last year's squad which won a school-record 27 matches, captured its second consecutive Conference USA title, and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in school history before bowing out to Miami.
The Green Wave open the spring season on Sunday, Jan. 16, against Florida A&M at 12 p.m. at Goldring Stadium. Following Sunday's match, Tulane returns to Goldring Stadium on Monday, Jan. 17, at noon to take on the Southern Jaguars.
