COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane University volleyball team will hit the road in quest of its first Conference USA victories over the weekend as the Green Wave travel to Dallas to take on SMU on Friday before heading to Oklahoma on Sunday to battle Tulsa.
The Green Wave have had to overcome several obstacles to date during the 2005 season, including fielding an inexperienced team that features seven first-year college student-athletes and surviving Hurricane Katrina and its ravishing effects on the city of New Orleans. Tulane enters the weekend 1-5 on the year and hungry for its first C-USA wins.
"A lot has gone on so far this season, but we had some good practices this week," first-year head coach Liz Kritza said. "Now, we have the opportunity to travel, play two quality opponents, and if we play well, we feel we can come away with a couple of wins.
"We have played well so far in conference play, but do not have any wins to show for it. We have gotten better each time we played, and now I think the team understands what it takes to win. If we can avoid the letdowns in key situations which have haunted us so far this year, we can be very successful."
The Green Wave enter the weekend averaging 14.65 kills per game and are hitting .181 with 293 kills and 139 errors in 850 attacks. Defensively, Tulane averages 1.70 blocks and 18.40 digs per game.
Freshman outside hitter Sara Radosevic leads the team with 5.15 kills per game and junior outside Sara Thorson is next with a 3.75 average. Rookie setter Luna Rebrovic paces the squad with 12.45 assists per game while junior libero Kelli Dickson and freshman middle Lauren Boatwright head the way in digs and blocks with 6.30 and 1.24 clips, respectively.
SMU enters Friday's match 6-11 on the year and 2-3 in C-USA play. Rachel Giubilato leads the Mustang offense with 3.73 kills per game while Jennette Evanco paces the Ponies with 5.12 digs per outing.
Tulsa, meanwhile, comes into the weekend 15-3 overall and 2-2 in league action. Kassiana Urnau paces a balanced Golden Hurricane attack with 3.18 kills per game, and Evyn Wills leads the Tulsa defense with 4.51 digs per contest.
Tulane's next home match is slated for Friday, Oct. 21, when the Green Wave battle Southern Miss at 7 p.m. at the G. Rollie White Coliseum on the campus of Texas A&M.
