Women's Golf Finishes 10th At Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - One day after showing a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round, the Green Wave did were not able to carry the momentum over as the Tulane University women's golf team finished 10th at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship Sunday at the par-71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club.
The Green Wave got off to a bit of a rough start, firing a 308 on Friday, but bounced back on Saturday to card a 299. On Sunday, though, Tulane shot a 310 to finish with a 65-over par 917. The Green Wave were just two strokes behind ninth-placed Penn State (306-308-301=915), three in back of eighth-placed Kent State (296-319-299=914) and five behind seventh-placed Northwestern (310-307-295=912).
Junior Alison Walshe, who earned All-America and Conference USA Player of the Year honors in 2005, led the Green Wave with a 12-over par 225 (78-72-75) while senior Liliana Alvarez (79-73-78) and junior Mary Ellen Jacobs (72-77-81) were five strokes back at 230.
Senior Jessica Issler finished the three-day event tied for 54th with a 236 (79-78-79) and freshman Kasi Lee rounded out the Tulane quintet with a 243 (88-77-78) to finish tied for 67th.
Georgia won the team title with a 30-over par 882 (297-293-292) to post a three-stroke victory over runner-up Purdue (288-301-296=885). Arkansas' Amanda McCurdy took home medalist honors with an even-par 213 (70-74-69) to finish two strokes ahead of Tennessee's Marci Turner (76-71-68).
Tulane returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when the Green Wave travels to Wilmington, N.C. for the Landfall Tradition, hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
