COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior Jenny Kuehn, junior Erika Valdes and freshman Joyce Ardies advanced to the quarterfinals as the Tulane University women's tennis team enjoyed a solid outing in day one of the Wells Fargo/Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Tournament Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Green Wave are co-hosting the event, along with Texas A&M, in an effort to raise funds for the Tulane Athletics Department. The event continues throughout the weekend with the championship matches in singles and doubles slated for Sunday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
"We're kind of banged up as a group, between nagging injuries and some illnesses, and that makes it hard to play tennis," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "But for the most part, we were able to overcome that, and I am very encouraged about our performance today.
"Jenny looked strong as a No. 1 seed should, and I thought Joyce was particularly gritty. She's got an inflamed wrist and has to serve underhand, but makes up for it with a lot heart."
Kuehn, who enjoyed a first-round bye via the top seeding in the tournament, defeated Manuela Santos of Texas-Tyler, 6-3, 6-1, in her first action of the event. Valdes, the tourney's No. 2 overall seed, also had a bye in round one before downing Lauren Trapani of Trinity, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ardies, meanwhile, posted a pair of victories on the day, defeating Stephen F. Austin's Gaby Gardeva 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round before sending Jordan McCombs of Lee College to the consolation round with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the afternoon.
True freshman Carina Bjornstrom earned a 7-5, 6-2 opening-round win over Arkansas-Little Rock's Laetitia Bourgeon, but fell to Kasia Jakowlew of Arizona in the second round, 6-4, 6-1.
Rookie Hedvig Lofdahl was forced to default her match against Mary Harrison of Stephen F. Austin due to a bout with the flue, but she did come back to play doubles with sophomore Gracie Glassmeyer in the afternoon only to fall to Texas A&M's Tiffany Clifford and Seva Iwinski, 8-5.
Glassmeyer earned a first-round bye in singles play, but after dropping the first set 6-1 and trailing A&M's Clifford 40-15 in first point of the second set, retired due to injury.
The tournament continues on Saturday with singles action slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. and doubles scheduled to start at 2 p.m. In addition, Tulane will host a silent auction and clinic at the Pebble Beach Country Club from 4-6 p.m. The clinic is available for juniors and adults, it will be conducted by participating coaches and student-athletes, and the fee is $25.
