LAS VEGAS, Nev. - For the second weekend in a row, the No. 15 Tulane women's tennis team relied on the bottom of its lineup to earn a 4-3, win. In today's 4-3 win over No. 30 New Mexico, it was sophomore Dorottya Magas clinching the match at No. 5 singles in the second round of the UNLV Lady Rebel Classic.
Last weekend, the bottom three players posted wins to send the Wave past No. 61 Tulsa at Goldring Tennis Center.
The 7-5, 7-5 win by Magas, a native of Budapest, Hungary, over New Mexico's Lucy Scott provided the final point Tulane would need to earn the victory. Senior Nancy Kockott, ranked No. 49 by the ITA, claimed the win at the three spot, 6-4, 6-2 over Michelle Heidbrink while the Wave's Darya Ivanov picked up the win against Nora Quintal, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4. Ana Saaibi needed a tiebreaker in her final set at No. 6 to edge the Lobo's Tiffany Robertson, 6-2, 7-6(4).
"Today was another gutsy performance, and we came away with another 4-3 win," Tulane assistant coach Tom Hand said. "Dori (Magas) did not have her best tennis today, but she managed to find a way to win for us."
At No. 1 doubles, the Tulane duo of Maria and Darya Ivanov led the No. 5 doubles team in the nation, Kovacek and Gersic, 7-4, but could not hang on, falling 9-7. The Lobos took the win at No. 2 doubles, but Kockott and Saaibi notched the win at No. 3 over UNM's Quintal and Scott, 8-5.
The Wave (7-4) face tournament host No. 48 UNLV, who advanced after upsetting No. 21 Fresno State, in the Sunday's championship match at 2 p.m. (CST). Tulane returns to the Goldring Tennis Complex on Sunday, March 6, hosting William and Mary at noon.
