NEW ORLEANS, La. - In a match that saw three singles matches with four tie-breaking sets, the No. 14 Tulane women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 20 William and Mary, snapping a six-match winning streak on Sunday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Complex.
Tulane's top doubles tandem of Maria and Darya Ivanov edged William and Mary's duo of Candice Fuchs and Megan Moulton-Levy, ranked No. 25 in the nation, 9-7, but the Tribe (8-1) would capture the remaining doubles contests to take the early 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Wave and the Tribe battled throughout singles competition, but Tulane would score just a pair of points as William and Mary won its third match of the season against a higher-ranked opponent.
For the second time this spring, junior Jenny Kuehn collected a win over a player ranked in the Top 40 as No. 55 Kuehn defeated No. 39 Megan Muth in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Tulane tallied its final point at the five spot as sophomore Darya Ivanov won her fourth consecutive match, 7-6(2), 6-3, over Lingda Yang.
"It was a hard-fought match today, they are a very good team," Tulane assistant coach Tom Hand said. "We've dodged some bullets lately, and it just came to an end. Now we just have to get ready for next weekend."
Tulane (8-5) is back in action next weekend, hosting a pair of matches at Goldring Tennis Complex. South Alabama visits on Friday, March 11, for a contest starting at 2 p.m. while VCU and the Wave square off next Sunday at noon. Both matches are free to the public.
