SEATTLE, Wash - The Tulane University men's tennis team had its biggest challenge of the year to date on Friday evening against No. 11 Ohio State; and the challenge was answered. The Green Wave's veteran lineup pulled together in singles action and sophomore Ted Angelinos clinched the 4-3 victory with a hard-fought tiebreaker decision at No. 4 singles in the first round of the Great Northwest Shootout at the University of Washington.
Tulane, ranked No. 17 in the nation, dropped the doubles point and then won three of five singles matches to even the score at 3-3 with Angelinos still in action. The sophomore from Greece dropped his first set 6-7 to Scott Green, but rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set went to the tiebreaker with Angelinos prevailing.
The Green Wave, which remains undefeated at 5-0, now faces No. 43 Minnesota on Saturday at 2 p.m.
In Friday's match, sophomore David Goulet posted an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Alberto Sottocorno cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Junior Jacobo Hernandez collected the Wave's third point, winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3, to set up Angelinos' clincher.
In doubles action, Dmitriy Koch and Sottocorno played an excellent match at No. 1, but feel 8-5 to the top-ranked duo in the nation, Green and Ross Wilson.
