ATLANTA, Ga. - Tulane University diving standout Danielle Carrillo may be just a freshman, but she was among the region's elite over the weekend as the native of Kirkland, Wash., participated in the 2005 NCAA Zone B Diving Championship at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Carrillo, who two weeks ago helped the Green Wave win the 2005 Conference USA championship in just its second season, finished 41st in the one-meter springboard with a score of 191.95 and came in at No. 44 in the three-meter event with a 163.65.
"This is a tremendous experience for Danielle," Tulane diving coach Chris Devine said. "It was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season to have her qualify for the Zones, and what she experienced this weekend will be nothing but beneficial in the future.
"The diving groups are very large and each of the events took over two and a half hours. When you sit for half and hour between each dive, that's something you have to get used to. This is one of the most talented Zones to compete in and I believe the people who won this weekend (at the Zone B Championship) will probably be the same ones winning national championships next weekend."
The only diver on the Green Wave roster in 2004-05, Carrillo was twice named Conference USA Diver of the Week, and earned a spot in the Zones after posting a 285.98 in a dual meet vs. future C-USA opponent Rice on Jan. 29 at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
