
Women's Tennis Holds Off Rice

HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore Dorottya Magas extended her singles winning streak to nine consecutive matches as the No. 20 Tulane women's tennis team held off future Conference USA foe Rice, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Magas and teammate Ana Saaibi picked up the first of three doubles wins for the Wave, 8-2 at No. 3. An 8-6 victory by the nation's No. 50 tandem of Jenny Kuehn and Julie Smekodub on the first court and an 8-5 win by the team of Nancy Kockott and Darya Ivanov as Tulane swept the doubles point.
In singles play, the Green Wave extended to a 3-0 lead before the No. 29 Owls got on the board. Smekodub, ranked No. 97, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kimberly Patenaude on the second court while Magas improved to 11-2 on the spring and 14-3 overall with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 5, her ninth consecutive singles win.
Sophomore Darya Ivanov defeated Rice's Dominique Karas, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 to clinch the win for Tulane, which stands at 11-5 on the season. Rice falls to 10-5 after its first home loss of the season.
Tulane takes on Boise State tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Houston, and plays its next six matches on the road. The Wave returns to Goldring Tennis Center on April 13, hosting LSU.
