NEW ORLEANS, La. - Returning to Goldring Tennis Center for the first time since March 13, the No. 15 Tulane women's tennis team puts its nine-match winning streak on the line against No. 42 LSU in the Goldring-Jacobs Tennis Challenge at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is free, and the Greenbackers will host a crawfish boil starting at 4:30 that is free to fans wearing green.
The event is one in a series of four named for Tulane alum Bill Goldring and LSU alum Stanley Jacobs. These long-time friends have both served on the Board of Trustees and Board of Regents for their respective schools and are supporters of the sport of tennis and their schools' teams. The men's teams from Tulane and LSU square off in the Goldring-Jacobs Challenge in Baton Rouge, also on Wednesday evening.
After recording two upsets on the weekend over then- No. 17 TCU and then-No. 15 Baylor, the Green Wave jumped four spots to No. 15 in Tuesday's weekly Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, and extended its winning streak to nine matches.
Leading the way for the Green Wave is Jenny Kuehn, who sports a No. 46 singles ranking and teams with Julie Smekodub to form the No. 34 doubles team in the nation. Senior Nancy Kockott is ranked No. 97 while Smekodub checks in with a record of 14-6 and a ranking of 118.
While the Tulane team has won nine straight, sophomores Darya Ivanov and Dorottya Magas both have lengthy singles streaks of their own. Ivanov has been victorious in her last 11 matches while Magas ran her streak to 14 by clinching both matches with wins at No. 6 over the weekend.
The Tigers, ranked No. 42 in Tuesday's ITA rankings, will play their second match in as many days as LSU hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon. Amanda Mang is the only ranked player on the LSU roster, checking in at No. 125.
Following the Goldring-Jacobs Tennis Challenge, Tulane wraps up the regular season by hosting UNO on Saturday and Texas-Arlington on Sunday for Senior Day. First serve for both matches is slated for noon, and admission is free.
