NEW ORLEANS, La. - Despite a strong effort from senior Dmitriy Koch, the Tulane University men's tennis team was upended by state-rival LSU, 6-1, on Wednesday at W.T. Robinson Stadium.
The match was the fourth in the Goldring-Jacobs Challenge, which has included the men's and women's tennis matches between the two schools for the past two years. The series is named for Tulane alum Bill Goldring and LSU alum Stanley Jacobs. These long-time friends have both served on the Board of Trustees and Board of Regents for their respective schools and are supporters of the sport of tennis and their schools' teams.
Koch, playing in the final regular season match of his career, posted an impressive 6-4, 6-4 upset of nationally-ranked Mark Growcott at No. 1 singles. In doubles, the veteran teamed with sophomore Alberto Sottocorno for a 9-8 marathon victory over Growcott and Ken Skupski, who are ranked No. 7 in the nation.
However, despite those victories, 18th-ranked Tulane could not add any more points as it dropped to 18-5 overall. LSU, which is ranked No. 15 in the nation, improved to 17-7.
The Green Wave won the opening sets in three singles matches, but could not hold on in any of those as the Tigers came from behind for victory in all three.
Koch's victory in singles came after Tulane had dropped its No. 3 singles match and pulled the Wave within a point at 2-1. However, LSU posted a victory at No. 2 and another at No. 6 to clinch the match win.
The match was the final regular season contest for the Green Wave, which will travel to Louisville next weekend for the Conference USA Tournament.
