LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tulane University opened action at the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 quarterfinal victory over DePaul University on Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The top-seeded Green Wave will play in the semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. (Central) against the winner of the late quarterfinal between Memphis and USF.
The win was the 13th in the last 15 matches for Tulane, as well as the Wave's seventh straight C-USA Tournament triumph - its last loss came in the 2002 C-USA Championship match. Ranked No. 19 in the country, Tulane improves to 19-5 with the win.
The Green Wave began the match by taking the doubles point as David Goulet and Jonah Kane-West teamed up to defeat Gabe Inchauste and George Want, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles and Ted Angelinos and Jacobo Hernandez edged DePaul's Eric Huffman and Robert Kortoczo, 9-7, at No. 2 to clinch the point.
In singles action, Goulet put the Green Wave ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Kotrozco at No. 2. Alberto Sottocorno, who now has a team-best 17 singles wins opposite just three losses, topped Jack Komar, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5. The clincher for the Wave came when Angelinos beat Wang 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.
"We played pretty darn well at 2 and 3 doubles," Klein said. "We played well in singles on every court. David Goulet played great in singles and doubles; Jacobo played very strong in doubles. It is tough to single anyone out, because it was a good team performance today. We will need to raise our level in doubles to keep winning."
Tulane also held leads at the other three singles matches when the match was stopped upon the Wave's clinching.
