NEW ORLEANS, La. - With a multitude of coaching and playing experience as a former WNBA and Louisiana Tech player, Monica Maxwell returns to the state of Louisiana as an assistant women's basketball coach at Tulane University.
A 1999 graduate of Louisiana Tech who played in a pair of Final Fours for the Lady Techsters, Maxwell spent four seasons in the WNBA with the Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever. Her 62 three-pointers during the 2000 season was the second most in the WNBA and led the Eastern Conference. She later played for the NWBL's Springfield Spirit and currently serves as an assistant girl's basketball coach at Pike High School in Indianapolis.
"I think she brings a well-rounded background as a successful college and professional player along with her experience as a coach," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "She's tremendously competitive and is very excited about the opportunity to work in collegiate athletics. Playing at the level that she has played and in the Final Fours, Monica brings a certain mentality and attitude that she will help instill in our players. Recruits can look at Monica as someone who has achieved what a lot of them would like to accomplish in their careers."
"I'm very excited to get back to Louisiana, but more excited to be working with Coach Stockton and the rest of the Tulane staff," Maxwell said. "They are good quality people. I can add to the work ethic that is already in place, and I look forward to being a part of getting the team back to the NCAA Tournament."
Maxwell has earned high reviews from former coaches and colleagues, including former Louisiana Tech and Indiana Fever coach Nell Fortner, who recruited Maxwell to Ruston and also guided her in Indianapolis.
"Monica is a young up-and-comer in the coaching profession who carries herself well and is a very nice, good person," said Fortner, who is currently at Auburn. "She had a great college career and will be a great college basketball coach. Monica is a hard worker and a good person, and you have to start with those two things first to be successful in this profession. Those two qualities will carry her very far."
As a member of two Final Four Louisiana Tech squads, Maxwell ended her Lady Techster career in fourth-place on the school's all-time career three-point field goals list and third in three-point field goals attempted. The 1996 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Maxwell averaged 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and was twice named first team All-Sun Belt and was a member of the West Regional All-Tournament team after recording a double-double to send Tech to the Final Four in 1999.
An Indiana native, Maxwell takes the staff spot vacated by Christy Thieler, joining Stockton, Kellie Kennedy and Michele Savage on the Green Wave bench.
