BATON ROUGE, La. - For the second time this season, Tulane had opportunities against a tough LSU squad on the road, but could not break through, losing to the 10th-ranked Tigers, 4-1, in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship at the W.T. Robinson Tennis Stadium.
Tulane, which is ranked No. 20 in the nation, closes its season with a 22-6 record, setting a new school standard for victories. LSU improves to 21-8 as it heads to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in College Station, Texas. The Tigers defeated the Wave during the regular season as well.
After losing the doubles point, Tulane battled with LSU at each singles position, but other than a win by Ted Angelinos at No. 4, the Wave could not break through.
"It was right there, we just did not convert when we had opportunities," Tulane coach Robert Klein said. "We left a lot of break points on the table. To their credit, they played well. It was like a replay of last time. Against a top 10 team, you need to convert. In baseball terms, we had a lot of men on base, we just did not get them home."
The keys to the match were at the top of the lineup as Tulane's Dmitriy Koch and David Goulet battled Mark Growcott and Ken Skupski, both nationally-ranked singles players. Klein had hopes to at least split at the top against the Tiger big hitters.
Koch opened well, winning his first set, 6-3, at No.1; while Goulet struggled at first, losing 4-6 in the first set at No. 2. However, fortunes changed for both in the second set, as Koch fell 2-6 and Goulet rebounded for a 6-1 triumph. Both players battled through the third sets, with Koch staying even with Growcott at 4-4 and Goulet fighting to a 5-5 deadlock with Skupski. However, breaks by both LSU players led to wins at both positions, with Growcott's win clinching the victory for the Tigers.
"We were in battles everywhere else," Klein said. "When the match ended, Jake [Jacobo Hernandez] and Alberto [Sottocorno] were in good position. We needed to get one of the matches at one or two."
Hernandez was tied at three in the second set after losing the first set 6-7, while Sottocorno fell 6-7 in the first set, but won the second 7-5.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Green Wave quickly fell in a hole as freshman Jonah Kane-West was dispatched in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 after battling cramping for the entire match.
"We got a little unlucky in singles with Jonah," Klein said. "He was running on empty but still gave everything he had."
Angelinos lifted the Wave onto the scoreboard with a near flawless effort at No. 4 singles, winning 6-4, 6-3.
"Ted winning in straight sets was good for us," Klein said. "He played great. Two days ago, he was hit in the eye and he still came right out and he was ready to go. I can't ask for anything more from him."
