NEW ORLEANS, La. - Two days after helping the Green Wave clinch a share of the 2005 Conference USA title, Tulane University baseball standout Brian Bogusevic was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.
Bogusevic earned the honor after striking out nine in eight shutout innings Saturday at Saint Louis. Squaring off against Billiken ace Ryan Bird, Bogusevic scattered four hits, allowed multiple baserunners in just one inning and only two runners got as far as second base.
After giving up three hits in the first four innings, he faced the minimum over his final four frames with two three-up, three-down innings and getting a pair of inning-ending double plays in the sixth and seventh to earn his 10th win of 2005.
Bogusevic also had a solid weekend at the plate where he hit .455 (5-for-11) with two doubles, a pair of RBI and five runs scored. He had at least one hit in all three games and posted a .571 on-base percentage with three walks. Bogusevic had two-hit outings in the first two games of the weekend, going 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base on Friday, while helping his own cause with a 2-for-4 showing on Saturday.
For the year, Bogusevic leads the team with a 2.60 ERA, 97.0 innings pitched and a .235 opponent batting average, while tying for the team lead with 10 wins, and ranking second on the squad with 98 strikeouts. At the plate, he is hitting .351 with seven doubles and 19 RBI while scoring 19 runs and stealing nine bases in 11 tries.
The weekly honor is the fourth of the season for Bogusevic, who claimed Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors, Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week recognition from Collegiate Baseball and CSTV Student-Athlete of the Week from College Sports Television on Feb. 14, C-USA Pitcher of the Week and College Baseball Foundation Honor Roll recognition on Feb. 28, and LSWA Pitcher of the Week honors on March 28. Bogusevic also claimed CBF Honor Roll recognition for his weekend at Saint Louis.
Bogusevic and the Green Wave return to action on Thursday, May 19, when Tulane battles current C-USU runner-up TCU in game one of a three-game weekend beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Turchin Stadium. The two teams will play again on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before closing out the regular season on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
