Baseball’s Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Just Short
Apr 18, 2026 | Baseball
The Green Wave trailed 10-3, entering the ninth but nearly fought all the way back in scoring six runs and having the tying run on second base with two outs. The inning's scoring started on a bases loaded wild pitch to allow Nate Johnson to score. Tanner Chun followed with a two-run double. Matthias Haas then singled with two outs to drive in the team's fourth run of the inning and put the score at 10-7. Trent Liolios was down to his final strike before punching a double to right to score two runs and put the score at 10-9. The final Tulane batter was retired on a fly out to right to end the game and allow the Owls to hold on by their fingertips to the 10-9 victory.
Jake Toporek (1-3) started and allowed four runs in 4.2 innings on seven hits and two walks allowed while striking out four. Jack Brafa surrendered a pair of runs (one earned) in 0.2 of an inning. Jude Abbadessa allowed four runs on five hits in his 1.1 innings worked with three strikeouts. Michael Devenney surrendered two hits but was unscored upon in his 0.2 of an inning. Max Mazinter also threw a scoreless 0.2 of an inning to close things out for Tulane.
Nolan Nawrocki knocked in a pair of runs with his second home run of the season. Liolios totaled three hits, two RBIs and scored a run. Jason Wachs had a hit, a walk, a run scored and drove in a run on his fourth home run of the season. Jack Johnson picked up a base hit. Kaikea Harrison and Nate Johnson each drew a walk and scored a run. Haas tallied a run scored, a hit and an RBI. Chun totaled a pair of hits and RBIs plus scored a run. Tye Wood walked and scored a run.
Kide Adetuyi (2-2) earned the victory for FAU with six innings worked and seven strikeouts.

The Owls added a pair of runs, 3-0, to the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run from Brando Leroux.
FAU added a run, 4-0 to the lead in the fifth on back-to-back two-out hits. The second one, a double by Brett Patten, brought in the team's fourth run of the game.
Tulane had some two-out magic in the sixth inning, 4-2, as Liolios singled the other way and was followed by a two-run home run from Nawrocki.
FAU got both runs back in the bottom of the frame, 6-2, on a Patrick Ward single followed by a single by Nick Romano. It was Romano's eighth RBI of the weekend.
The Owls added four runs to the lead, 10-2, in the seventh on a Kyle Boylston RBI single followed by a two-run home run from Ward and an RBI single from Romano.
Tulane answered with a run in the eighth on a Wachs home run.
The team scored six runs in the ninth, but saw the comeback fall just short in taking the 10-9 loss to FAU.
