COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane University doubles combination of Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno played one of the tightest matches of the tournament, but could not prevail as they lost, 6-2, 6-7, 6-7, in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Friday afternoon at Texas A&M's Mitchel Tennis Center.
After winning the first set against 38th-ranked Marko Rajevac and David North from Georgia Tech, the next two sets both went to tiebreakers and both times, the 27th-ranked Green Wave duo came up short. In the second set, Koch and Sottocorno fell 7-3 in the tiebreaker while the third set saw a 7-5 tiebreaker defeat for Tulane.
"We had our opportunities, but we made some bad decisions," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said. "They outplayed us in the second-set tiebreaker; we had another opportunity in the third-set tiebreak, but we let that slip by too. We came so close, we were right there, but it just didn't happen unfortunately. That's the way it goes."
With a victory, the Green Wave players would have earned All-America honors. The last time Tulane had All-Americans in doubles was in 2003 when Michael Kogan and Victor Romero earned the honors. Kogan and Mikko Viljanen were also All-Americans in doubles in 2001.
Koch and Sottocorno defeated the No. 7 ranked team of Pedro Rico and Scott Doerner from Pepperdine on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament.
