With the loss, Tulane falls to 7-21 all-time against Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles won their fourth straight game against the Green Wave dating back to the 2003 season.
Sophomore defensive lineman Julian Shives Sams blocked his first career field goal on a 44-yard attempt by Southern Miss kicker Darren McCaleb on the final play of the first half. It marked the Green Wave's second blocked field goal in as many games as Jeremy Foreman blocked a field goal last week at Marshall.
Junior defensive tackle Frank Morton posted a career-best eight tackles, including six solo stops. He also posted a career high with two and a half tackles for losses totaling 12 yards, including two sacks for minus-11 yards.
The Green Wave quarterbacks had a tough outing on Saturday as senior Lester Ricard and sophomore Scott Elliott combined to complete just four of 16 passes for 42 yards and an interception.
Elliott saw his most extensive time of the 2006 season on Saturday, coming on in relief of Ricard to start the second half. Elliot played the entire second and third quarters, and the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter. He finished the day 3-for-8 for 30 yards and was sacked once.
Tulane was held without a touchdown first time since Oct. 30, ,2004, when Houston defeated the Green Wave 24-3. That broke a string of 25 consecutive games that Tulane scored at least one touchdown.
Junior running back Ray Boudreaux earned his first start of the 2006 season and the second of his career on Saturday, rushing for a career-best 51 yards while posting 68 yards all-purpose yards with one catch for 17 yards. Before Saturday's contest against the Golden Eagles, Boudreaux's last start came on Oct. 30,, 2004 against Houston. Ironically enough, that is the last time the Green Wave offense was held without a touchdown.
Junior running back Matt Forté missed his first game of the 2006 season after suffering a knee injury last week against Marshall. Prior to Saturday's ballgame against the Golden Eagles, Forté had played in all 31 games of his Tulane career.
The Green Wave defense had a solid performance on Saturday, turning Southern Miss away twice on fourth down, blocking a field goal and forcing another miss on a long attempt in the fourth quarter.
Junior defensive lineman Antonio Harris started his 32nd consecutive game, the longest streak on the Green Wave team. Harris has now started every game of his collegiate career.
