HOUSTON, Texas - Cara Davidoff posted an NCAA B Standard time in the 50-yard freestyle and Victoria Givens qualified for the U.S. Open in the 200-yard individual medley as the Tulane University swimming and diving team continued to impress in day two of the 2006 Conference USA Championship Meet Thursday at the University of Houston Alumni Center Natatorium.
The Green Wave posted season bests in every event in the C-USA Championship so far in 2006 and concluded the day in fifth place with 136 points. Tulane holds a 51-point lead over sixth-place Marshall (85) and are just 16 points behind fourth-placed Rice (152). SMU holds the day-two lead with 318 points, 105 better than current runner-up Houston (213).
"We have had 100 percent season-best swims thus far in the meet," Tulane head coach Daniella Irle said. "We are the only team in this meet that is at 100 percent season fastest swims. That means I am without question coaching the absolute best performing team in the conference for the 2005-06 C-USA Championships. We are faster now than we were at any point this season in spite of everything we have endured since December. I have to congratulate this team as well as my staff."
Tiffany Brown got things going for Tulane in the day's first event, posting a 4:58.22 in the preliminaries of the 500 free and doing even better in the finals with a 4:57.15 to finish fifth overall. Leann Laing was next for Tulane in the event with a 5:02.64 to finish eighth.
Givens posted a school record in the 200 IM with a U.S. Open-qualifying time of 2:05.09 in the preliminaries, and finished seventh in the finals with a time of 2:05.87. Davidoff, meanwhile, had a 23.51 in the preliminaries of the 50 free, and was even better in the evening with a 23.44 to finish eighth overall. Both times were NCAA B Standards, making her provisionally eligible for the NCAA Championships on March 16-18 in Athens, Ga., and the times also qualified Davidoff for both the U.S. National and U.S. Open.
In diving action, rookie Arshia Rassi scored 122.65 points in the three-meter springboard. In the final event of the day, the quartet of Brown, Linda McEachrane, Kate Naglick and Givens posted a season-best 3:51.65 in the 400 medley relay to finish fourth.
Tulane continues play in the C-USA Championship on Friday when the Green Wave take part in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, one-meter diving and 200 free relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated to start at 6 p.m.
