NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University volleyball standouts Sara Radosevic and Jenn Miller were named Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday.
The duo helped the Green Wave win the 2006 Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament championship over the weekend with 3-0 wins over Lamar and McNeese State before posting a five-game victory over cross-town foe UNO in the tourney finale. The pair marks the first Tulane student-athletes to earn C-USA weekly honors in volleyball since Nov. 3, 2003 when then-senior middle blocker Kim Swafford claimed Player of the Week distinction.
"We had a successful weekend, and Sara and Jenn's play are a big reason for that," second-year head coach Liz Kritza said. "The honors are well deserved, and it is good to see these young women get rewarded for their hard work.
"Sara was an All-American last year and was named Freshman of the Year many times over, so it was good to see her pick up where she left off. She has worked very hard during the offseason, and it showed this weekend. Jenn is a very talented freshman who earned a starting spot during preseason practice, and she is a stabilizing force for our back-row defense."
Radosevic, a sophomore outside hitter from Zagreb, Croatia, earn the league honor after claiming MVP honors at this weekend's Trosclair Tournament. In the three matches, the 2005 AVCA All-American averaged 5.18 kills, 2.55 digs and 6.23 points per game while chipping in with nine service aces and four total blocks.
She hit .261 for the week, including a pair of matches over .300 with marks of .375 and .324 against Lamar and McNeese State, respectively. Radosevic tallied double-digit kill totals in all three matches, including 31 against UNO, which ranks tied for fifth in Tulane single-match history.
Radosevic saved her best performance for the championship match against the Privateers when she posted a double-double courtesy of 16 digs - which ties her career high - to go along with four service aces and four total blocks (one solo, three assists).
Miller, meanwhile, claimed C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors after averaging 4.91 digs per game with 54 ups in 11 stanzas in the Green Wave's sweep of the field at the Trosclair Tourney. A freshman from San Pedro, Calif., Miller had double-digit dig totals in all three matches, including a season-best 28 against UNO, which ranks tied for seventh in Tulane single-match history.
In addition to her defensive prowess, Miller scored eight points with single kills against Lamar and McNeese, and tallied two aces in all three matches over the weekend.
"We have gotten off to a good start as a team, " Kritza said. "A 3-0 start is solid, but we have a along way to go. If we can continue to work hard in practice and execute in our matches, I think we have a chance to be very successful."
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when they open play in the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge against host Iowa at 7 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa. From there, Tulane takes on UMKC (Missouri-Kansas City) and Florida Atlantic at noon and 5 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
Season and single-match tickets for the 2006 season are currently for sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office. The ticket office is located on the first floor of the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
