
Baseball To Host Memphis In Conference USA Weekend Series

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball will look to continue its hot streak and build on a 5-1 Conference USA record over the weekend as the Green Wave open a three-game series vs. league foe Memphis on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Zephyr Field.
The two teams will play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with a nationally televised game on College Sports Television (DirecTV Channel 610, DISH Network Channel 152) with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. All three games will also be broadcast on the flagship radio station of Tulane baseball, WRBH 88.3 FM, and the paid members of the All-Access Pass can listen to the games on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com. In addition, live stats for the weekend's contests are available for free on the web via GameTracker.
"This is certainly the most improved club in league and the best Memphis team since I've been here," Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. " They have done a great job of rebuilding that program and that shows what makes Conference USA so tough. We're going to have our hands full and we're going to have to play very, very well. We're going to be challenge, but we're looking forward to it."
Tulane enters the weekend showdown vs. Memphis 23-8 on the year and winners of 11 of its last 13 contests, including a 16-9 victory over arch-rival LSU on Tuesday at Zephyr Field.
As a team, the Green Wave are hitting .303 with a .420 slugging percentage courtesy of 38 doubles, six triples and 24 home runs. Junior shortstop Cat Everett paces the club with a .368 batting average while junior second baseman Brad Emaus and senior third baseman Tim Guidry follow with respective marks of .339 and .320. Emaus and sophomore centerfielder Nate Simon lead the team with four home runs each, Emaus paces the club with 27 RBI, and Everett heads the squad with nine stolen bases in 10 attempts.
From the mound, Tulane sports a 3.04 ERA and has held opponents to a .245 batting average. Green Wave hurlers have combined for 270 strikeouts and just 72 walks in 281.0 innings. Sophomore Shooter Hunt and junior Sean Morgan are tied for the team lead with six wins each, Hunt leads the staff with a 1.53 ERA, and Morgan paces the squad with 79 strikeouts, a .178 opponent batting average and 53.2 innings pitched. Senior closer Daniel Latham leads the bullpen with 16 appearances, and has seven of the Green Wave's nine saves in 2007.
Memphis, meanwhile, comes to town 17-11 on the year and 3-3 in C-USA action after sweeping Southern Miss last weekend at Nat Buring Stadium.
As a team, the Tigers are hitting .282 with a .419 slugging percentage on the strength of 53 doubles, six triples and 21 home runs. Bill Moss leads the team with a .379 batting average and is followed by Chris Kirkland and Joey Lieberman with marks of .370 and .307, respectively. Moss paces Memphis with nine home runs and 30 RBI, and K.K. Chalmers is an impresive 15-for-18 in stolen bases.
The Tigers' pitching staff has a cumulative 4.92 ERA and has limited opponents to a .262 batting average. Memphis hurlers have combined for 166 strikeouts and 96 walks in 238.0 innings of work. The Tigers have used 18 pitchers on the year, and among the regulars, Matt Yokley paces the squad with a 2.14 ERA and 31 strikeouts while leading the bullpen with 11 appearances and three saves. Dusty Davis has pitched in a team-best 27.2 innings and leads the staff with a .204 opponent batting average.
This weekend's games against Memphis marks the 57th, 58th and 59th meetings between the two teams on the diamond, and Tulane holds a 35-21 advantage in the all-time series. Under Rick Jones, the Green Wave are 28-7 against the Tigers, including taking two of three last season at Nat Buring Stadium.
Following the weekend series against the Tigers, Tulane closes out its nine-game homestand on Tuesday, April 10, with a 6:30 p.m. showdown vs. Louisiana-Lafayette at Zephyr Field.
