TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones
Overall thoughts on the game
"We needed to have a good solid game and you're going to get one if you keep playing hard if you're good enough. We beat a really good team tonight and we know that. I was concerned when we came over here. With the wind blowing out like it was to left and watching them in batting practice hit so many balls out of the ballpark, I knew it was going to be a night where we were really going to have to pitch well. Even though we had seven walks, I thought Taylor Rogers really pitched well in a starting role and got some big outs, and Rob Segedin was outstanding in relief. We had some quality at-bats early and played great defense."
On what he expected out of Taylor Rogers
"We were just trying to get through the ballgame. What he did really exceeded our expectations tonight. I say that with no disrespect to anything other than the fact that UNO is just so talented. You play to find out and you just never know. The thing about it is with us going into such a big conference weekend, Taylor had to get us deep in the ballgame. He did that and Rob Segedin was really good in relief."
On the performance of Taylor Rogers
"Even though we had some walks, he made the pitches when he had to. Turning the double-play on Johnny was a big, big out. It was just one of those nights where we just did everything right, and we needed to. When you play a team that is seventh in the nation in offense and the wind blowing out to left like it is on the Lakefront, you better keep the ball down and make your pitches. Taylor did a good job of that and so did Seggy."
Additional comments on Rogers and Rob Segedin
"He mixed his fastball and his breaking ball, and he was real economical in that when he got ahead, he was able to put guys away. You'll see him a lot, I assure you. The same with Rob Segedin. When something doesn't go right, you've got to start looking for alternatives. They're not always there for you, but tonight they were."
On this weekend's C-USA series at Houston
"It's really big. We have not had a lot of success over there over the years. It's been a tough place for us to play. And now they're leading the league. Our league is so good, every game is so big. We're going to have to play the way we played tonight.
SOPHOMORE PITCHER Taylor Rogers
On his performance on the mound
"Once I was able to settle in, I was able to keep the ball down and just throw strikes. Early, I struggled with command, and wasn't ready to go in the very beginning. I struggled a little bit to open the game, but the guys made a great double-play behind me and it was a lot easier to settle in, especially when they started putting runs on the board."
On getting the inning-ending double play with bases loaded in the sixth
"That was a huge momentum builder. With Giavotella up at the plate, he's a great hitter, so I was just trying to keep the ball down and get something on the ground. Rob made a huge play. It was a ground ball, he touched the bag and threw to first. It was a great, great momentum shifter."
On what teammate Rob Segedin showed on the mound tonight
"Another big lift is finding out that Seggy can pitch a little bit. That will be a huge lift to our bullpen with added depth. With that, I feel the way we're swinging the bats, we've got a great lift going into Houston. Hopefully, great things will happen."
On his offense giving him the lead early in the ballgame
"It's huge. When you put up crooked numbers like that, it's a lot easier to pitch with a lead. You throw strikes and just throw the ball over the plate because one swing of the bat can no longer change the game."
UNO HEAD COACH TOM WALTER
Overall thoughts on the game
"They say good pitching beats good hitting, and that was the case tonight. I thought Rogers and Segedin were outstanding. I was very impressed with both of them. We struck out 13 times tonight, and that is too many. We were chasing too many pitches outside the zone. But give Tulane credit. Rogers and Segedin both had good breaking balls."
