DENTON, Texas - Freshmen Lauren Pfohl and Grace Tarka won the 200 back and 100 fly, respectively, and rookie Elizabeth Whitaker won the 200 individual medley, but it was not enough as the Tulane University swimming and diving team dropped a dual meet at North Texas, 173-118, Saturday afternoon at the Pohl Recreation Center.
Competing in just their second team-scoring event following three years without having a team, the Green Wave performed admirably on Saturday. The difference, however, was the Mean Green's overall experience. With the loss, Tulane falls to 0-2 on the year. North Texas, meanwhile, improved to 1-0.
"Despite what the score may say, we had another good day in the pool today against a very good North Texas team," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello said. "We came here with two goals, to swim well and have fun. I think we did both once again and I'm proud of the overall effort from each and every young lady on this team.
"Lauren Pfohl and Grace Tarka once again were very good, and we actually had two divers compete today - which is a first for the Tulane women's swimming and diving program. Sarah McGoldrick made her collegiate debut and actually dove from the 3-meter springboard for the first time in her career, so I'm very proud of her and her efforts."
Pfohl won the 200 back with a time of 2:06.69, while Tarka clocked a 2:12.96 in the 100 fly and Whitaker posted a 2:12.96 in the 200 IM. Tulane's 400 free relay team of Allie Evans, Pfohl, Elizabeth Whitaker and Kylie Kastes, meanwhile, touched the wall at 3:39.51 to post a win in that event as well. In addition to the four wins, Tulane also tallied second-place finishes in the 400 medley relay, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 fly, 50 free, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 IM and 400 free relay.
Whitaker posted Tulane's top time in the 200 free at 1:57.08 and the Green Wave's Pfohl, Tarka, Rebekah Harris and Kayla Alf-Huynh finished 2-3-4-5 in the 100 back with times of 1:00.49, 1:00.64, 1:01.26 and 1:01.47, respectively. Erin Cunningham finished runner-up in the 100 breast with a mark of 1:10.33 as did Alf-Huynh in the 50 free at 25.12. Kastes and Gisele Calderon finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly with times of 2:10.36 and 2:10.54.
Cunningham also finished second in the 200 breast at 2:31.28 and in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.29. Kastes finished second in the 100 fly at 1:00.09, just ahead of Calderon at 1:01.12 and Samantha Davis at 1:03.71.
In the relays, the Green Wave posted a second-place showing in the 400 medley relay as Pfohl, Cunningham, Tarka and Whitaker combined to clock out at 4:02.43. Kristine Gu, Hayley Tilton, Alf-Huynh and Calderon, meanwhile, finished second in the 400 free relay.
McGoldrick scored a combined 350.72 in diving, posting a 171.97 to finish fifth in the one-meter springboard and a 178.75 to finish third at the three-meter height. Sophomore Michelle Fryar, meanwhile, finished eighth in the one-meter springboard with a combined score of 132.22.
"I want to tip my hat to the job that the Tulane coaches are doing re-establishing that program for the first time since Hurricane Katrina," North Texas head coach Joe Dykstra said. "Their coaches are doing a great job building the team back up and I look forward to watching them build success much as we have here the past few years at North Texas, and to swimming many more great meets against them in the coming years."
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on LSU. From there, Tulane will head to Houston for the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational from Nov. 20-22.
