NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's tennis team was a gracious host at the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championship Thursday, as freshman Etham Frenkel was the long member of the Green Wave to pick up a singles victory in the 80-player tournament. Tulane's doubles' tandem of Shaye Wali and Coby Kramer-Golinkoff picked up a victory in the first round before doubles play was suspended due to rain.
Wali, a sophomore, teamed with Kramer-Golinkoff in the round of 64 doubles for a quick 8-1 victory over Matt Shoptaugh and Jacob Dawson of Centenary.
In the early matches, Frenkel earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Centenary's Michael Reeks to advance from the round of 128 to the round of 64. Freshman Chris Somers fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to Lucas Viel of South Alabama, while Kramer-Golinkoff was downed by Alabama's Ricky Doverspike, who advanced to the round of 32 with a win over Daniel Moser of UAB.
The Green Wave fell in all five of its Round of 64 matches, as Piotr Banas of Louisiana-Lafayette topped freshman Adam Bernstein, 6-2, 6-2. Frenkel was bested 6-0, 6-3, by Mississippi State's Tanner Stump. Freshman Rodrigo Rappaccioli was topped by MSU's Chris Doerr, 6-2, 6-4. Samford's Zac Dunkle took out Wali 6-3, 7-5, while freshman Joe Young battled LSU's Cody Loup before succumbing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Tulane will play its final matches of singles in the consolation round on Friday morning.
Rappaccioli faces Trey Walston of Alabama, while Kramer-Golinkoff takes on the Crimson Tide's Michael Davis. Somers meets Michael Reeks of Centenary, Frankel will go head to head with Louisiana-Lafayette's Javier Pulgar, and Young meets ULL's Robert Voss. All five of those matches will begin at 8 a.m. at Tulane's Goldring Tennis Complex.
At 9 a.m., Bernstein faces Nick Maruillo of Auburn, and Wali takes on Carl Abalos of Samford.
In the doubles competition, Bernstein and Frenkel will take on the duo of Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev of Auburn, while Young and Rappaccioli meet Mississippi State's George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin. Kramer-Golinkoff and Wali will meet Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson of Alabama, with the doubles getting underway at approximately 11 a.m. at Goldring Tennis Complex.
The singles competition continues with the round of 32 reaching its completion in the morning session, followed by round of 16. Doubles will pare down from 64 to 16 tandems in the afternoon session.
