TULANE NOTES
Saturday's game marked the 29th meeting between Tulane and Southern Miss on the gridiron and with the loss the Green Wave falls to 7-22 in the all-time series. Southern Miss has now won the last four meetings dating back to the 2003 season.
The loss drops Tulane to 2-5 on the year and 0-4 in Conference USA play. The Green Wave have now lost 10 straight league contests, with their last win coming against SMU, 34-27, on Sept. 25, 2008 in the Louisiana Superdome.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Ryan Griffin started for the first time on Saturday, becoming the first rookie to start under center for Tulane since Scott Elliott started at Rice on Nov. 12, 2005. Griffin finished the day 21-of-33 for 158 yards and an interception.
Griffin was sacked six times on Saturday, the most sacks allowed by Tulane this year and the most since giving up a half dozen sacks to SMU on Sept. 30, 2006, in the Louisiana Superdome.
Senior running back André Anderson posted 117 all-purpose yards on Saturday, rushing 19 times for 92 yards and a touchdown and catching a career-high six passes for 24 yards. Anderson's rushing total gives him 1,639 for his career, which moves him into 12th place in the Tulane record book. He surpassed Jovon Jackson, who rushed for 1597 from 2002-05, for 12th place and trails Terrence Jones (1,761 from 1985-88) by 122 yards for 11th place in Tulane career rushing yards.
With a catch in the second quarter, senior flanker Jeremy Williams has now caught at least one pass in 20 consecutive games dating back to the 2007 season and has hauled in at least three passes on 16 occasions during the 20-game stretch.
Williams had four catches for 21 yards on the day, giving him 157 catches for 2,356 yards and 15 touchdowns for his career. He remains ninth in Tulane history in career catches - one behind eight-placed P.J. Franklin (1995-98) - sixth in career receiving yards - 103 yards behind fifth-placed Adrian Burnette (1997-2000) - and tied for ninth in career touchdown catches.
Senior strong safety Chinonso Echebelem forced his fourth fumble of the season with a force in the second quarter. He becomes the first Tulane defender to force at least four fumbles in a season since Israel Route had four in 2006.
Southern Miss' blocked field goal return for a touchdown was the first by a Tulane opponent since last year's Rice contest on Oct. 25, 2008, in the Louisiana Superdome.
With a start at center today against Southern Miss, junior Andrew Nierman has now started all 31 games so far in his collegiate career. Also extending double-digit start streaks for Tulane were junior OT Pete Hendrickson and senior DE Adam Kwentua with 17 straight each, and junior WR Casey Robottom at 13.
Tulane's captains for the game were senior RB André Anderson, senior LB David Kirksey, senior DB Chinonso Echebelem and sophomore FB Antoine Duplessis.
