Tulane Game 8
Tiger Stadium
Baton Rouge, La.
Saturday's game marked the 98th meeting between Tulane and LSU on the gridiron and with the loss the Green Wave falls to 24-67-7 in the all-time series. LSU has now won the last 18 meetings dating back to the 1983 season, including 10 straight in Tiger Stadium.
The loss drops Tulane to 2-6 on the year and extends the Green Wave's losing streak to four.
Tulane failed to score for the first time since a 49-0 loss to Texas on Sept. 28, 2002 in the Louisiana Superdome. Today's shutout snaps a string of 85 straight games with a score.
Senior defensive lineman Adam Kwentua picked off the first pass of his career with 6:16 left to play in the first quarter. Kwentua is the first Green Wave defensive lineman to pick off a pass since Reggie Scott accomplished the feat against East Carolina on Sept. 12, 2008 in the Louisiana Superdome.
Reggie Scott's sack of LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson in the first quarter was the first sack by a Tulane defender since the third game of the 2009 season against McNeese State. In that game, the Green Wave had two of their six sacks they came to Baton Rouge with on their resume.
Senior wide receiver Jeremy Williams hauled in eight passes for 78 yards, giving him 165 receptions for 2,434 yards for his career. Williams moves into eighth place in Tulane career history in catches and trails seventh-placed Terrell Harris (1998-2001) by just one catch. He holds steady at sixth place in career receiving yards and is now just 25 yards behind fifth-ranked Adrian Burnette (1997-2000).
Williams posted his fifth 100-plus all-purpose yard game of the season, tallying 78 yards through the air, 21 on the ground (on four carries) and 58 return yards (on four kickoff returns). He now has 3,015 career all-purpose yards, which is 364 from cracking the Top 10 in Tulane history. His 1,069 all-purpose yards in 2009 are 290 shy of P.J. Franklin's mark of 1,359 in 1998 for 10th place in Green Wave single-season history.
For the fourth consecutive game, redshirt-freshman Ryan Griffin posted a career high in passing yards, tallying 163 yards after completing 21 of 29 throws. His 21 completions ties his career high from a week ago at Southern Miss and his 72.4 completion percentage is the best of his young career.
Sophomore defensive end Brooks Cunningham recorded the first sack of his career by bagging Jefferson in third quarter.
Senior punter Ross Thevenot had his best day of the year, booting the ball eight times for 366 yards (45.8 avg.), including three of 50-plus yards. He has now punted 120 times for 5,037 yards (42.0 avg.). He remains third in Tulane career history in yards-per-punt average and is 22 punts and 153 yards shy of moving into the Tulane Top 10 in both categories.
Junior Andrew Nierman missed Saturday's ballgame with a hamstring injury, marking the first time in his career that he did not start. Prior to tonight's ballgame, Nierman had started all 31 games dating back to the season-opener in 2007. Starting in Nierman's place was junior Joey Ray, who made his first career start tonight against the Tigers.
Also making his first career start was freshman Jordan Sullen, who started at free safety. Sullen is the seventh freshman to start a game for Tulane in 2009, joining true freshmen D.J Banks (WR), Hunter Howden (OL), Zach Morgan (OL), Austen Jacks (LB), Shakiel Smith (LB), and redshirt-freshman Ryan Griffin (QB).
Garrett posted a career-best eight tackles (3 solo, 5 assists) on Saturday against LSU. Senior defensive end Logan Kelley, meanwhile, tallied a season-best six stops (3 solo, 3 assists).
A trio of Tulane players extended their double-digit starting streaks - junior OT Pete Hendrickson and senior DE Adam Kwentua with 18 straight each, and junior WR Casey Robottom at 14. Joining the double-digit start streak on Saturday were WLB Travis Burks and CB Charles Harris at 10 each.
Tulane's captains for the game were senior RB André Anderson, senior LB David Kirksey, senior DL Reggie Scott and DE Adam Kwentua.
