New Orleans- The Tulane University baseball team picked up another victory Tuesday night at the Green Wave knocked off visiting McNeese State 15-7 under the lights at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane, now 10-5, got 4.1 solid innings out of starter Taylor Rogers before bringing in Jonathan Garrett, who picked up his second win of the season.
The Green Wave packed the runs in, posting two five-run innings in the third and fifth frames. The third inning began with back-to-back walks that led to the scoring barrage that saw all but one Wave hitter step into the box. Moritz crossed the plate first for Tulane, after advancing into scoring position on one of Sam Honeck's four hits of the evening. Moritz would later score on a throwing error by the Cowboys, one of six for McNeese State. Drew Allain picked up a base on balls in the inning, filling the bases for Scott Powell, who wore a pitch in the leg to move everybody up a bag and give the Wave the lead which they would not relinquish the rest of the night. Josh Prince also picked up two RBI in the frame on a two-out infield hit and Tulane put up a quick five runs on two hits, making it 5-1 headed into the fourth.
"We needed to keep stretching the lead because when you do leave a ball up to these guys [McNeese State hitters], they are going to make you pay," head coach Rick Jones said. "I thought we did that well and we ran the bases really well."
The Green Wave bats were swinging again in the fifth, after the Cowboys scored four of their own in the top half of the inning, led off by Matt Fontenot's ground-rule double. The Cowboys went station to station with Mace Hebert recording the first RBI of the inning after plating Fontenot. McNeese State picked up the remaining three runs on a Steve Irvine home run down the left field line. But Tulane responded, winning the inning after Allain got things started with a single through the right side. Scott Powell reached on a sacrifice bunt and moved up on a McNeese State error, which also scored Allain. Tulane batted around in the inning that saw another five runs posted, along with three hits and two errors.
The Green Wave tallied three more runs in the seventh when Honeck doubled down the right field line to score Moritz who had worked his way on via a fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schaffer followed with a walk and with runners at first and second, Jamie Bruno stepped in and doubled down the right field line to score Honeck and move Schaffer to third. Allain singled through the right side to plate Schaffer, giving the Wave 15 total runs in the contest.
The Green Wave will be back in action Friday night from California, as Tulane travels to UC Irvine for a three-game weekend series. Radio broadcasts will be available on WRBH 88.3FM. First pitch on Friday will be 8PM Central time.
