NEW ORLEANS- The Green Wave baseball team's struggles continued Tuesday night as they fell to Louisiana-Lafayette 6-3 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Tulane, now 17-15, failed to get the big, two-out hit and left the bases loaded on two occasions in the loss.
"We had so many chances early in the ball game to stretch the lead," head coach Rick Jones said. You put yourselves in a position where you make a mistake with one pitch and you get beat and that's exactly what happened. We didn't pitch as well out of the bullpen as we needed to overcome the fact that we didn't swing the bat with runners on."
The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board first when Chad Keefer got the one-out double to left field. He moved to third on a ground ball out and was picked up by Greg Fontenot (3-4, RBI), who singled to right for the first run of the contest. Green Wave starter Aaron Loup (1-2) came back and induced the fly ball out to end the inning, giving up only the lone run.
Tulane answered back in their half of the third when Drew Allain led off the bottom of the third with a base hit up the middle to stay hot. Allain (2-4) moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Nick Boullosa and Matt Ryan followed, logging his first career base hit in the form of a RBI double to plate Allain and tie the game at one. Josh Prince reached on a drop third strike and ULL starter Greg Harmon issued back to back walks to Scott Powell and Sam Honeck. Honeck picked up his 48th RBI of the year on the walk and the Green Wave took the lead, 2-1.
The Cajuns got even in the top of the seventh as they worked the bases loaded and walked in Alex Fuselier to knot the game at two. Travis Whipple broke the game open, taking Preston Claiborne deep to right field for the grand slam, giving ULL the 6-2 lead.
Tulane picked up another run in the form of a sac-fly off the bat of Jeremy Schaffer, to plate Powell (2-4) but it was not enough as Tulane fell, 6-3 to the Cajuns.
The Green Wave will travel to Orlando to take on UCF in a three-game set beginning Friday at 5:30PM CT time. The series will be broadcasted on WRBH 88.3 FM.
