NEW ORLEANS - Tulane volleyball head coach Sinisa Momic has announced the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent for the 2011-2012 school year. Liz Karnes, Chloe Tom, Grace Weaver and Anna Wruck have all inked their NLI and will play for the Green Wave in 2011.
"I think that this is another good addition to our program, along with this season's freshman class, and it looks like all four of the players we signed will be able to contribute in a good way. We have a good combination of size and skill sets in this group. Ana and Liz are both six foot three and can play in the middle or on the right side, while Chloe and Grace are both very well rounded players. This is a class that brings many different facets to our team, with a good balance of blocking, defense and offense. They are all four great students and I really feel that Amy Williamson and Kallie Noble have done a great job with this recruiting class."
Liz Karnes will enter her collegiate career after lettering twice at Memorial Senior High School in Houston, Texas. She helped her volleyball club team, the Texas Tornadoes, to a seventh place finish in the 18U Open Division at 2010 USA Volleyball Championships. She also helped the Tornadoes to a top third finish at the Junior Olympics in 2008. A National Honor Society member, Karnes was named one of PrepVolleyball.com "Seniors to Watch" in the Houston area. She also earned Academic All-State and Academic All-District accolades during her final season with the Mustangs.
"(Liz) is a player that has seen time in the middle and on the right side and she can see time either of those spots for us. She is a tall girl with really good blocking skills and a great arm span. She is a raw talent and we believe that with some more coaching she can be a real force at the net."
A two-time qualifier for the USA Beach Volleyball Association's Junior Olympics, Chloe Tom has won a pair of Amateur Athletic Union Beach Volleyball silver medals and one gold medal during her prep career. A National Honor Society member at Flintridge Sacred Heart, Tom has lettered twice for the Tologs in volleyball, while playing sand volleyball during her time as a prep. On the club scene, the 5-5 defensive specialist has helped San Gabriel Elite and Southern California VC finish among the top five at the Junior Olympics. She also helped SGE to a number one ranking in the Southern California Volleyball Association in 2005.
"Chloe is a player that will contest for time at our libero next season and will also contribute to our sand volleyball program when they begin competition next season," said Momic. "She is a great passer and really understands the game. She plays the game at such a high level and really has a feel for (the game)."
Joining the program from Belton (Texas) High School is four year letterwinner Grace Weaver. The 5-10 outside hitter earned Highest Honorable Mention accolades from PrepVolleyball.com as one of the publications Soph-79 rankings. Weaver was named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State 5A squad as a junior and just recently won her second straight District 12 Player of the Year award. She plays her club volleyball for the Austin Performance VC and helped the 17U squad to a fifth place showing at the AAU Junior Olympics.
"Grace is a good all-around player from Texas and she has a chance to contribute right away on the outside," Momic said. "She is able to play in the front row and has really good leadership skills. Her volleyball IQ is very high and she could be a player that can help us both indoor and in our sand program."
Anna Wruck will enter her Tulane career after lettering all four standout seasons at Santiam Christian High School in Corvallis, Ore. As an outside hitter and middle blocker for the Eagles, Wruck has earned All-State accolades during each of her first three seasons, including First Team honors during her junior campaign. This season, Wruck has helped the Eagles to a 32-2 record and the Oregon 3A State Championship. Wruck was named the State Tournament MVP, as she led her squad to their second straight 3A State Championship. She plays her club volleyball for MVV 18U Black and has been selected team captain during her sophomore and junior tours with the squad.
"Anna is on a high level. She can jump and really hits the ball with some pace. She is a player that can really help our blocking game in the near future," said Momic. "She is a player that as she matures will really help our program."
