TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Tulane men's tennis players Etham Frenkel and Rodrigo Rappaccioli each enjoyed success in the consolation brackets of the 2010 Crimson Tide Fall Invitational on the second day at the University of Alabama.
Frenkel won the consolation bracket of the Palmer Draw by winning three matches on Saturday. The sophomore defeated Chattanooga's Matt Harris, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinal round, and then got past West Alabama's Clay Cooke, 6-2, 6-2, before defeating Middle Tennessee State's Kyle Wishing, 6-4, 6-4, in the final.
"Etham did a great job today winning three singles matches in a row," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "He put all the pieces of his game together and got some great wins and confidence that he'll carry into the spring."
Rappaccioli reached the final in the consolation bracket of the Stabler Draw. The Green Wave sophomore came from behind to defeat Southern Miss' Jan Burmeister, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7, and edged UAB's Daniel Moser, 6-7, 6-3, 10-8, in the semifinal round. Rappaccioli then fell to Illinois' Bruno Abdelnour, 6-1, 6-4, in the final.
"Rodrigo overcame a deficit in both of his wins today to claim victories over two players that he lost to over the last year," Booras added. "That shows his hard work is paying off and he is continuing to develop his game."
Idan Mark, who reached the semifinals on the Bear Bryant Draw, fell to top seeded Akash Muppidi of Boston College, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in the semis.
"Many of this weekend's good results were wins at a level we hadn't seen in the past," Booras concluded. "We've seen some play from our guys that will allow us to compete well at the top of our lineup as well as strengthen the overall depth of our team. I'm encouraged by our continued growth and how it is going to give our team a boost this spring."
Tulane concluded the fall schedule this weekend in Alabama and will return to the courts in January in dual match play.
