NEW ORLEANS - Wins by Tulane's No. 1 and No. 2 men's tennis players were not enough on Saturday afternoon, as the Green Wave fell to cross town rival New Orleans, 4-3, at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Tulane's (2-3) Joe Young, playing on court 1, defeated UNO's (1-2) Vinay Kamineni in just one set, 5-0, before Kamineni retired from the match. Wali, playing on court 2, defeated Stepan Siska, 7-6, 7-6, to give the Green Wave two points in the match.
Rodrigo Rappaccioli of the Green Wave defeated Ben Smith in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, on court 4 to make close the final margin to 4-3.
"Today was a hard fought match against a very solid UNO team," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "The guys competed well and got themselves in positions to win. Unfortunately we weren't able to convert on some break points in our doubles, or close out some first sets in singles. That would have definitely given us more momentum and a different feel to the match."
The Privateers took the doubles points with the duos of Siska and Benjamin Bouhana and Abdelrahman Zaki and Rohit Chivukula each winning. Siska and Bouhana got past Tulane's pair of Wali and Young, 8-4, on court 1, while Zaki and Chivukula defeated Etham Frenkel and Trevor Getz, 8-4, on court 3.
The Green Wave pair of Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Adam Bernstein defeated Ben Smith and Guilherme Rebolo, 8-3, on court 2.
UNO wrapped up the victory by winning three of the first four singles matches. After Young made quick work of Kamineni on court 1, UNO's Bouhana defeated Bernstein, 6-3, 6-4, on court 3; Zaki got past Frenkel 6-2, 6-4, on court 6 and Guilherme Rebolo upended Getz, 7-6, 6-1, on court 6.
Tulane will be back in action on Thursday when the Green wave host Nicholls State at 1 p.m. CST at the Goldring Tennis Center.
