OXFORD, Miss. - Tulane's youthful men's tennis team gained great experience against No. 11 Ole Miss on Saturday, but the Rebels proved to be too much in a 7-0 sweep of the Green Wave at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
"I am proud of these guys for fighting hard against a top team in front of a big crowd," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "You have to be really sharp against a ranked opponent like Ole Miss. These young guys have learned in a trial-by-fire this season and playing against some of the nation's top players and top teams will only make us better in the long run."
Ole Miss (7-1) made quick work of Tulane (2-5) to earn the doubles point to open the match. The duo of Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lutjen for Ole Miss held off Tulane's Shaye Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 8-3, on court one, while the Thiemann brothers defeated Joe Young and Adam Bernstein, 8-1, on court two and Adrian Forgbery Skogeng and Harry Fowler shutout Trevor Getz and Etham Frenkel, 8-0, on court three.
The Rebels then quickly secured the squad's third straight victory by winning by the score of 6-1, 6-1 on courts four, five and six in singles play.
Chris Theimann defeated Rappaccioli on court four to earn the second point of the afternoon, while Jaime Vazquez Catoira got past Frankel on court six and Fowler beat Getz on court five.
Marcel Thiemann, the 66th-ranked player in the nation, defeated Young on court two, 6-2, 6-1, for the Rebels' fifth point.
Tulane's Wali gave all he had against 95th-ranked Vorster, but fell, 6-2, 6-4, on court one.
The battle on court three was the one of the Green Wave's bright spots as Bernstein fell just short against Forberg Skogeng, the 103th-ranked player in the nation. The Tulane freshman won the first set, 6-4, but Forberg Skogeng won the second set, 6-4, and went on to win the third set tie-breaker, 10-6, to earn the victory and the seventh point for the Rebels.
The Green Wave will be off until hosting Lamar on Tuesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. CST in the Goldring Tennis Center.
