NEW ORLEANS - It was a very tightly contested dual match between Tulane's men's tennis team and UT San Antonio on Tuesday afternoon, but the Green Wave could not squeak past the Roadrunners, falling 4-3 at the Goldring Tennis Center.
The match came down to a pair of three set matches that would decide the result. Tulane's (3-5) Shaye Wali edged UTSA's (7-6) Tyler Brown, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 on court one to tie the team score at 3-3. Max Stratmann from UTSA then got past Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 on court four to give the Roadrunners their third straight win.
"Today was really a great college tennis match," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "It came down to the last match deep in the third set. Our guys competed well today even though it did not go our way at the end."
Tulane opened the match by taking the doubles point behind the solid performances by the duos of Etham Frankel and Trevor Getz on court three and Adam Bernstein and Rappaccioli on court two. Frankel and Getz defeated UTSA's Brown and Stratmann, 8-6, while Bernstein and Rappaccioli got past Daniel Moreiras and Pedro Zanotelli, 8-6, on court two.
Tulane's other point came from the racquet of Joe Young on court two in singles play. The freshman took three sets to defeat Martin Ayala, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
"We had a good team meeting to try to figure out how we can grow from this match and the guys were very receptive and fired up about the next couple days of practice to get ready for our road swing," Booras added.
The Green Wave hit the road for three straight matches in Houston this weekend. Tulane will face No. 48 Rice on Friday in a Conference USA match before taking on Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday and North Carolina State on Sunday.
