TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Tulane track and field team's opened up the Seminole Invitational with a plethora of season best performances in the distance events and a sampling of field competitions at the Mike Long Track on the Florida State campus. Rebecca Coady posted a victory in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and Ana Ruzevic captured her third consecutive Javelin competition with a season-best toss.
"We got off to a very respectable start tonight, highlighted by a pair of event winners," said Tulane head coach Eric Peterson. "Ana Ruzevic won the javelin to stay undefeated with a season best throw. She won pretty convincingly, which is great because she is a very good javelin thrower and we are excited about the progress she is making right now. Rebecca Coady won her third race in a row, all at different distances, and performed very well in the event (3,000-meter Steeplechase) that she qualified for the NCAA regional last season. It was a pretty solid opening mark for her."
The Green Wave opened the competition with a pair of personal best performances in the Discus when Jane Ball and Jennifer Triplett posted throws of 30.15-meters and 28.29-meters, respectively. Kelly Curtis followed that with a team-best jump of 1.58-meters in the high jump, with Arielle Minor going out at the height of 1.52-meters, tying her season best.
Ruzevic took her third straight Javelin competition with a toss of 45.05-meters, besting her throw of 44.80-meters in the season opening meet. Brree Carter placed fifth overall in the long jump with a jump of 5.53-meters, which is the team best mark this season, and Raquelle Collins posted a leap of 5.15-meters to place eighth.
Coady won her third straight race, at three different distances, when she posted a win in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. She posted a winning time of 11:00.43 to finish ahead of teammate Jessica Dallager who was second in a time of 12:26.99. Coady's time was just 11-second off of her school record time of 10:49.84 that she set as an NCAA Regional qualifier last season.
Maggie Gentry and Caitlin Hornbeck each posted times under 20-minutes in the 5,000-meter run to close out the women's competition on day one. Gentry placed fifth in the race with a 19:27.46 showing and Hornbeck posted a time of 19:41.02 to finish sixth.
On the men's side of things, Tulane watched the four distance runners' solid marks in their first competitions at their distances in 2010. Corey Squire placed second in the three-man field in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase in a time of 9:54.50. Mike Mainguy paces a trio of Green Wave harriers with a 16:28.30 showing in the 5,000-meters, followed by Jordan Vance (16:36.07) and Phil Scruggs (16:52.91).
