IRVING, Texas - The Tulane track and field program and Conference USA have announced that senior hurdler/jumper Nicolette Taku has been named the recipient of the Spirit of Service award for the winter season. The Baton Rouge native represented Tulane University on the list of 12 recipients - one from each Conference USA institution - and continues to be a leader on her squad, in the classroom and in the New Orleans community.
"Nicolette is a very impressive young woman that consistently demonstrates a genuine and sincere desire to serve others and our community," said Tulane head track and field coach Eric Peterson. "She is a shining example of what we hope for from all of our student/athletes. She is well balanced in her daily academic and athletic workload and still finds time to involve herself with many service oriented projects. I am happy to see that she is being recognized for her efforts."
Taku serves as the president of the SAAC and will win one of the Torch Awards handed out by the Tulane Athletics Department later this month. The Baton Rouge, La., native earned the C-USA Academic Medal two years in a row and was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll the last three years. The senior completed her indoor track and field career placing 13th at the C-USA Championships in the long jump with leap of 5.50m (18-00.50) and 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.97m (39-03.25).
Conference USA (C-USA) is a 12-member, NCAA Division I-A Conference based in Irving, Texas. This realignment was formed on July 1, 2005, and the Conference was first established in 1995.
