NEW ORLEANS - After having a week off from competition, the Tulane Track and Field squad will return to the lanes for the Seminole Invitational hosted by Florida State University. The Olive and Blue will send both their men's and women's squad to the Mike Long Track on the Tallahassee campus to compete with a competitive field in the Sunshine State.
"As we have been all season long, we are focused on improving this weekend," said head coach Eric Peterson. "We were off last weekend for Easter break and we are looking forward to getting our team back into a competitive mind set. This meet looks like it will present a really good opportunity for our athletes to set some personal bests and continue to improve as we approach the Conference USA Championships in about a month from now. This is going to be a good chance for all of our kids to compete against some national level competition."
A multitude of student-athletes will compete this weekend for the Olive and Blue, with 18 different athletes participating on the women's side and 16 athletes taking part in the men's program. Tulane will take part in 17 of the events on the women's side of things and are entered in 13 of the twenty events schedule for the men.
Rebecca Coady will have her first opportunity to improve upon her 2009 regional qualifying mark of 10:49.85 - which is also the Tulane school record - which she set at the Cole-Lancon Twilight last season. Coady and Jessica Dallager will compete in the event on Friday evening. It will be a distance showcase on Friday on the track with Caitlin Hornbeck also competing in the 5,000-meter run.
Ana Ruzevic will take part in the Javelin on Friday evening, looking to claim her third individual title in as many outdoor competitions this season, while Raquelle Collins and Brree Carter will compete in the long jump. Jane Ball and Jennifer Triplett will each throw the discus and the trio of Adiyah Crute, Kelly Curtis and Arielle Minor will all take part in the high jump.
The Saturday sprint events will feature Jerica Banks (400), Vanessa Kienast (400), Olivia Kizzee (100), Danielle Pensack (400), Tiffanie Smith (200) and Candice St. Etienne (400) all taking part in events. Coady will run the 800-meters and Johanna Gretschel will compete in the 1,500 meter run. Crute, Curtis and Minor will all three take on the field in the 100-meter hurdles, while the 4x400-meter team will close out the running events for the Green Wave.
Rachelle Melancon and Kelsey Moran will pole vault for the Olive and Blue, while Nicolette Taku will triple jump versus six other competitors at FSU.
In the men's program, Tulane will compete in five of the six events on Friday and take part in eight events on Saturday. Garrett Myer will compete in the long jump and high jump, with Max Yanker joining him in the high jump, and Jonathan Kirby will throw the Javelin. Corey Squire will compete in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase for the first time in 2010 and the trio of Mike Mainguy, Phil Scruggs and Jordan Vance will take on the 13-man field in the 5,000-meter run.
Evan Nicoll will close out the field events by competing in the pole vault to open up the Saturday competition and Myer - who will be the busiest of the Green Wave participants on the weekend - will run the 100-meter dash for his third event of the meet. Jared Firestone will take part in the 200-meter dash, with Koplan Nwabuoku and Jon Frano each running the 400-meter dash.
The 800-meter run will feature Jordon Holtzman and Kevin Mitchell in the 22 person race and Brian Lozes joins Max Miller in the 17 person 1,500 meter run. Brayden Kelly will take part in the 400-meter hurdles and the Green Wave will close out the meet by competing in the 4x400-meter Relay.
