NEW ORLEANS - The third day of the Tulane volleyball team's fall practice schedule was just one session, but the squad has taken a multitude of steps towards being ready for the 2010 season. Today's session drew attention to the progress that the Green Wave has made on the defensive side and in the communication aspect between the young roster.
"I really like how the team responded today," "It looks like our floor defense and effort, in chasing down every ball, is really good and I like that. That can be the basis for what type of competitive team we are. It always starts with going after every ball on defense. So far that looks like it is going to be really good."
The morning started with conditioning and rolled right into the team practice portion of the schedule that started at 9:00 a.m. and ran through noon. After athletic trainer Becky George led stretches, the team went right into some attacking drills, working on footwork and location of their attacks.
From there, the 13-member squad broke into three groups of three - with the three setters rotating time with each unit - and competed in a Queen of the Court. The three teams rotated as each side out point was awarded. It was a close competition between the three teams, with the winning squad edging out the other two teams by three and four points, respectively.
"I like how everybody is communicating, talking and competing all of the time," said Momic. "It helped that everyone was here for summer school, so it looks like they are more comfortable around each other. Everyone is listening to us coaches and responding right away."
Following the Queen of the Court portion of the practice, the Green Wave worked on some service receives. As their teammates uncorked service, the three players on the other side of the net were awarded points for a quality pass and had a point deducted for a poor pass.
Tulane will conclude their first week of fall camps with a pair of workouts on Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13, before taking the weekend off.
