COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Late rallies by host Maryland in the third and fourth sets handed the Tulane Volleyball team their only loss of the weekend in the finale of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational. The Green Wave held leads in three of the four sets, but the Terrapins finished the third and fourth sets strong to claim the match by scores of 13-25, 25-22, 17-25 and 22-25.
Maryland grabbed an early lead in the first set of the match, scoring the first four points, and eventually led 7-3. After a pair of Shepard kills cut the deficit to 7-5, the Terrapins tallied the next six points and never looked back on their way to a 25-13 opening set victory. Shepard tallied three kills, while Azarri Badawi and Milica Jovic each chipped in two kills apiece.
The Olive and Blue fell behind 5-1 early in the second set, but used a 6-2 run of their own to knot things up at seven points apiece. The two teams exchanged leads until the Green Wave broke a 22-22 tie with three straight points to tie the match up at 1-1. Trailing 21-22, Shepard and Jovic teamed up to propel Tulane to the victory. Shepard tied the match with a kill and Jovic bookended a Shepard kill with a pair of service aces to close out the 25-22 win.
The third set went the way of the Terrapins, 25-17, even though the Green Wave held the lead for most of the set. After exchanging points early on, Tulane eventually led 12-9 after a pair of Shepard kills. Maryland rallied to tie the set at 15-15, eventually taking a one-point lead at 17-16, before closing the frame on an 8-1 run. Shepard tallied three kills, two blocks and a service ace in the third set to pace the Green Wave.
Tulane again grabbed the lead to start the fourth set, but Maryland connected on the points when it mattered most to end the match with a 25-22 win in set four. The Green Wave built an early 7-3 edge and held the advantage until the Terrapins knotted things up at 14-14. From that point, Tulane never trailed until UM grabbed a 22-21 lead and scored three of the final four points to claim the set and the match.
Shepard and Izabela Grot each collected 14 kills for the Green Wave, while Mel Mandelbaum dished out 42 assists. Shepard and Mandelbaum were each named to the All-Tournament team, with Shepard compiling 34 kills and committing only one error in 61 attacks. Mandelbaum posted a pair of double-doubles and averaged 37 assists and 11 digs in three matches.
