LAFAYETTE, La. - Tulane's men's tennis team opens the 2010-11 campaign this weekend when the squad travels West on I-10 for the Ragin' Cajun Invitational at the Cajun Courts Tennis Complex.
The Green Wave, led by second-year head coach Mark Booras, will have a chance to play against individuals from host school Louisiana-Lafayette as well as LSU, Lamar, Southern Miss, Xavier (New Orleans) and Ouachita Baptist.
"It is going to be a good tournament," Booras said. "There are going to be some good teams with LSU, Lamar, Southern Miss and obviously ULL so it is going to be a good field."
Tulane will begin competition Friday at 8:30 a.m. when sophomores Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Adam Bernstein get the 14-player Flight A underway. Rappaccioli, the No. 3 seed in the flight, will take on ULL's Ted Nilsson, while Bernstein will face LSU's David Roberts.
Junior Shaye Wali, the No. 1 seed in the flight, earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of Xavier's Steffen Giles Osborn against Lamar's Denis Ermilov at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
Joe Young also earned a top seed as the sophomore received a first-round bye in the 14-player Flight B He will face either Carlos Valdenebro of Lamar or Alex Doleace of USM at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
"It is a nice break for them," Booras said about Wali and Young's top seeds. "Playing in this heat gets tough. They get the bye because they had some decent records last year and got some recognition and get to sit out that first round, but hopefully will be able to get through that second round and on to the semifinals. "
Tulane's two freshmen, Takuma Ohashi and Holger Norregaard, will take to the courts at 8:30 a.m. in Flight B. Ohashi will battle Lamar's Diego Snyder and Norregaard will face USM' Paulo Alvarado.
"Holger and Taukama have both been working very hard," Booras added. "They are excited about being here at Tulane. They love campus, they love the city and they love the guys on the team. It has been a great situation so far and I'm eager to see how they compete. This tournament is going to be a nice way to break them into college tennis."
Flight C will feature only 10 players, including Tulane sophomore Coby Kramer-Golinkoff. Kramer-Golinkoff is schedule to play Ouachita Baptist's Ernesto Laborda at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
Doubles also gets underway Friday with two flights. Flight A, with 10 teams, will feature the No. 1 seeded duo of Bernstein and Rappaccioli and the pair of Wali and Kramer-Golinkoff. Bernstein and Rappaccioli earned a first-round bye and will not play until Saturday at a time to be determined, while Wali and Kramer-Golinkoff open with Lamar's Marton Horvath and Dusan Savkovic on Friday, time in to be determined.
Flight B in doubles, with just eight teams, will feature the Green Wave freshman duo of Ohashi and Norregaard. They will play ULL's Frankie Hoar and Daniel Alban on Friday.
