PITTSURGH - It was unforced errors that doomed the Tulane volleyball team in their 3-0 loss against Lipscomb in the opening match of the University of Pittsburg Invitational. Only two players reached double-digits in kills, one of which was TU's Izabela Grot, but the Green Wave committed 28 hitting errors and six service errors in the loss.
"We tried a different lineup today and it didn't produce enough in any skill set to compete with a team like Lipscomb," said Tulane head coach Sinisa Momic. "Every time we were in a position to get on a roll, we committed an unforced error and you can't do that against good teams. With all of the shuffling and some of our players getting shuffled into new positions, we are taking our lumps early and hopefully we learned from this today."
Tulane captured the first point of the opening set, but the Green Wave were unable to hold the early advantage as Lipscomb built a 12-7 edge. The lead stayed at five points, 17-12, before the Green Wave rattled off three straight points, the final coming on a block from Azarri Badawi and Grot, to make it a 17-15. Lipscomb scored five of the next six points and then closed out the first set at 25-18. Grot led the charge with four kills in the first set, but the Green Wave could muster only nine total kills to 14 by the Lady Bison.
In the second set, Tulane went back and forth with the Lady Bison and the set was tied at 14-14 after a ball handling error by setter Jake Pease. Lipscomb scored the next two points and led by just one, at 18-17, after a Grot kill. That was as close as the Green Wave would get, however, as the Lady Bison rattled off seven of the final eight points to claim the second set, 25-18.
In the third set, the Olive and Blue could manage only four total kills and an early 6-0 run would be the deciding factor in the final set. With the score knotted at 2-2, Lipscomb took control of the final set with six straight points and Tulane could pull no closer than three points the remainder of the time. Lindsey Shepard paced the team with two kills and Martone nabbed four digs. In the set, TU hit -.346 with four kills, 13 errors and 26 attacks.
For the match, Grot paced the squad with ten kills, while Martone had six and Shepard collected four in the three setter. Mel Mandelbaum handed out 24 assists, while Martone and Amaris Genemaras each led the squad with seven digs. Kaycee Green led all players with 12 kills and Alex Kelly had ten digs for the Lady Bison (3-2).
The second day of the event will feature the Green Wave versus Purdue at noon and Pitt in the tournament finale at 6:00.
