AUBURN, Ala. - Idan Mark and Shaye Wali, of the Tulane men's tennis team, each advanced into the third round of singles in the main draw of the 2011 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships with their victories on Thursday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center hosted by Auburn University.
Mark, a top 10 seed in a field of close to 100 players, received a first-round bye before upending LSU's Matt Zachary, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round.
Wali, a top 30 seed, also received an opening round bye before earning a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, victory over Mississippi State's Trey Seymour.
"I was really pleased with the way some of the guys played today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Idan got off to good start and got a good match under his belt and Shaye got a very good win today. He showed a lot of character with a nice comeback after being down a set."
Mark will face Alabama's Daniil Proskura in the third round on Friday morning, while Wali will battle Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss in the third round.
Green Wave junior Adam Bernstein won his first-round singles match, 7-6, 6-4, over Carl Alberton of UL-Lafayette, before falling to Auburn's Dennis Lengsfeld, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round. Fellow junior Rodrigo Rappaccioli also claimed an opening-round victory, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, over ULL's Damian Farinola, before bowing out to LSU's Stefan Szacinski, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round.
"A bunch of the guys made some nice strides today," Booras added. "They are consistently seeing where they are growing with both their wins and their losses. This is where we need to be as we finish the fall season and head into the spring."
The only Green Wave doubles team in action Thursday, Coby Kramer-Golinkoff and Takuma Ohashi, fell to UAB's David Zimmerman and Daniel Moser, 8-3. The other four Tulane doubles pairs received opening-round byes and will take to the courts Friday.
Tulane's eight singles players that did not advance in the main draw have been seeded in the consolation draw that begins Friday.
