NEW ORLEANS - Four days after helping the Green Wave put together its fastest meet of the 2011-12 season to date, Tulane University women's swimming and diving standout Kayla Alf-Huynh was named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
A junior from Portland, Ore., Alf-Huynh picked up her first weekly honor of the season and the second of her career. In addition to the C-USA Swimmer of the Week award she earned on Feb. 10, 2011, she becomes the first Tulane student-athlete to claim the league's weekly honor more than once in her career.
During Saturday's double-dual meet against Emory and host Alabama at the Don Gambril Olympic Pool, Alf-Huynh won the 50 free with a season-best time of 23.51. Her time is the No. 2 mark in C-USA and the No. 33 time among NCAA Division I swimmers to date this season.
Alf-Huynh also finished second in the 100 fly with a mark of 56.62 - her personal best, the No. 2 individual time and the No. 3 overall time in Tulane history. Her time in the 100 fly also ranks fourth in C-USA and 75th in the NCAA.
In addition, she swam leadoff for the 200 medley relay squad which clocked a time of 1:48.77, and had a leadoff split of 24.22 in the 200 free relay. Both relay teams finished third against the Eagles and Crimson Tide.
Alf-Huynh and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5, when Tulane plays host to Vanderbilt at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium. The head-to-head matchup against the Commodores is the final home contest of the 2011-12 season for the Tulane team, which will hold a special pre-meet ceremony honoring Hagar Elgendy as its lone senior.
