NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University swimming and diving team posted eight individual-event victories and tallied 20 season-best times as the Green Wave defeated Vanderbilt, 155-125, on Saturday afternoon at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
Swimming in the final home meet of her collegiate career, senior Hagar Elgendy helped spearhead the Tulane effort with a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.36 and finished second in the 100 free with a mark of 52.93. Elgendy also anchored the 200 medley relay team, which finished second overall (1:48.63) and swam the second leg of the Green Wave's 400 free relay, which helped clinch the team victory with a first-place showing (3:31.63).
"We swam and dove today's meet as one team and not as 25 individuals," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello said. "I was pleased to see everyone diving and racing with their teammates in mind. We had some rough events, and managed to come through with some big swims to make up for the point deficits.
"I was happy to see Hagar finish her final home meet with some season-best performances. She is racing exceptionally well and I'm excited to see how she performs at the Cougar Classic."
In addition to Elgendy's win in the 50 free, the Green Wave posted victories in the 100 back and 100 fly courtesy of the Kayla Alf-Huynh's 57.88 and 57.99, respectively, the 200 fly with Gisele Calderon's 2:05.55, the 500 free on Allie Evan's mark of 5:09.73. All of those times were season bests.
Not to be left out, sophomore Sadie Eicher also posted season-best marks, winning the one-meter springboard with a mark of 202.35 and the three-meter event with a score of 236.85. Elgendy joined forces with Alf-Huynh, Kristine Gu and Rachel Ranson to win the 400 free relay.
Allie Evans led the Green Wave effort in the 1000 free, finishing second overall with a season-best time of 10:31.96 and Elizabeth Whitaker did the same in the 200 free to finish second at 1:54.16. Freshman Shelby Kiser paced Tulane in the 100 breast with a 1:09.35 to finish fourth and in the 200 breast with a 2:31.14 to finish third. Fellow rookie Vanessa Loewen led the Green Wave with a second-place showing in the 200 back at 2:08.34 and freshman Laura Turpen touched the wall at 4:40.89.
"Kayla had another great meet as did Gisele Calderon," Guarriello added. "Kristine Gu has become consistently fast and is strengthening our group of sprinters. Allie came back from a tough loss in the 1000 and really raced the 500 which was where I think we solidified the win. I'm so proud of this group of young women. They're becoming exactly the team that we set out to build three years ago."
The Green Wave close out the fall portion of their schedule on Nov. 17-19 when they travel to Houston to participate in the Phil Hansel Cougar Classic Invitational. The event, which is hosted by the University of Houston, is a championship format tournament and will give the team a taste of way the 2012 C-USA Championship will run as the event is slated for Feb. 15-18 at the same venue.
