NEW ORLEANS - It's always a good idea to stay inside when weather in New Orleans dips into the 40's and that is just what the Tulane track and field program plans to do this weekend at the Birmingham Ice Breaker Invitational. The Green Wave will be one of 16 teams to open the 2011-12 indoor season this Thursday (December 8) at the brand new Birmingham CrossPlex.
Tulane will travel their full women's roster up Interstate 59 to open the indoor season against a solid field of teams, highlighted by Conference USA foes Southern Miss and UAB, along with regional foes Nicholls State and Ole Miss. Seven student-athletes will make their first appearance at the collegiate level, while Raquelle Collins, Zandria Debowles and Kasey Rodgers open their seniors seasons in the Olive and Blue.
Rodgers will be one of five Tulane runners to compete in the 200-meter dash, entering the meet as the top seed in the event, and sits second on the all-time list at Tulane in the event. The senior earned All-Academic honors from the Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after a stellar indoor campaign last season and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The senior ranks second in school history in the 200-meter dash event with a time of 23.78-seconds, with Gloria Asumnu holding the current school standard at 23.72.
Tiffany Kenney will have the heftiest workload on Thursday when she competes in three individual events in her first collegiate meet. A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kenney will participate in the 800-meter run, high jump and long jump. This type of assignment is nothing new for the multi-event athlete who won five state championships at Colorado Springs Christian and placed fourth overall at the USATF Championships in the heptathlon in 2010.
After donning the sky blue and white of her home country of Guatemala at the Pan-Am Games in October, Stefany Cruz will open her career in the Olive and Blue this weekend in Birmingham, Ala. Cruz placed ninth at the 26th Pan-Am Games, the redshirt-freshman will enter as the third seed in the long jump and the top seed in the triple jump. She has a career-best jump of 13.28 meters in the triple jump, a mark which is the national record in her home country and was set in August of 2011.
Tulane's squad will competed in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay, distance medley relay, high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault. Live results can be found by clicking here.
