NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's men's tennis team did what head coach Mark Booras asked of them heading into Sunday afternoon's dual match with Jackson State and came away with a 7-0 victory at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Booras asked his team to not only recover from last week's loss at Mississippi State, but he also asked the squad to play focused and play a complete match.
The Green Wave (5-2) did just that in the sweep of Jackson State (1-3).
"That was the challenge we put forth this whole week of practice," Booras said. "We said how are we going to play a complete match and how are we going to have that focus from the beginning of the doubles point to the end of singles. We knew that Jackson State was a team that could turn it on at any point and if we let up it was going to hurt us. We needed to play our game from beginning to end and the guys did a really good job of that."
Tulane did not lose a set and in the victory and won both matches in doubles play. Jackson State played with only five players and did not field a doubles team on court three and a singles player of court six.
Idan Mark and Radu Ionescu got things started on court one in doubles with a 8-2 victory over JSU's Navaneetha Baskaran and Mitchell DeJong, while Shaye Wali and Joe Young pair up to get past Vishesh Bhatia and Joe Luque, 8-5, on court two.
Rodrigo Rappaccioli got the scoring started in singles, making quick work of Nicholas Crawford, 6-1, 6-0, on court five to give Tulane the third point of the afternoon. The match was decided when Mark defeated Baskaran, 6-1, 6-2, on court one for the fourth point.
Ionescu defeated Bhatia, 6-4, 6-1, on court two to complete the afternoon, while Young won, 6-1, 6-2, on court three and Wali earned a 6-2, 6-1, victory on court 4.
The wins improve Ionescu and Young to 6-1 in dual match singles play this spring, while the double team of Mark and Ionescu improved to 5-1 in the spring.
Tulane will not play another home match until March 10 when Memphis visits the Goldring Tennis Center, but the Green Wave are in action again next Sunday at No. 18 Ole Miss for a 1 p.m. CST dual match in Oxford.
