OXFORD, Miss. - Tulane's men's tennis team began a three-match road swing with a 6-1 loss to No. 18 Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Green Wave's lone point of the match was earned by Idan Mark. Mark was awarded the win on court one after No. 99 Tucker Vorster retired during the first set with a 4-3 lead.
Tulane did not fare as well in the five other singles matches, losing three if the five in straights sets. Shaye Wali and Adam Bernstein each won their second sets after dropping the opening set, but both could not hang on to win the third.
Wali fell to Chris Thiemann, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0, on court four, while Bernstein lost to Johan Backstrom, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, on court five.
"This was a tough match against a very seasoned Ole Miss team," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "I did see some really good progress in our guys today. We were up a break in the second sets on four courts at the same time and if we hung on to win all four of those it would have become a different match. If this progress continues we can be a very successful team."
The clinching match of the afternoon for Ole Miss was on court three. Jonas Lutjen got past Joe Young, 6-3, 7-5, to earn the fourth point of the match for the Rebels.
Ole Miss took the doubles point by winning on all three courts. The Rebels pair of Chris Thiemann and Marcel Thiemann, the fifth-ranked doubles team in the nation, defeated Mark and Radu Ionescu, 8-3, to open the scoring on the afternoon.
Tulane continues the road swing next weekend when they travel to Florida to take on South Florida in Tampa on Saturday and face UCF in Orlando on Sunday.
